For a while now, I’ve been trying to figure out a way for me to get some time with the peacocks at the Los Angeles Arboretum. I’ve managed to do exactly that! I spent a few hours there only mere feet away from those absolutely stunning and vain birds. They’re in between acting like kings and fashion models walking down the runway. Their movement is controlled and graceful. Even when they hustle, they maintain all that grandeur. So like others in the bird kingdom, the males have the color and beauty to attract their mates. It is said that the females are attracted to the males with the most exaggerated characteristics. These tails are definitely exaggerated (and you can definitely call them vain!)
In comparison, the females seem much more understated and honestly just lighter on their feet!
These birds are stunning — no doubt about it. The colors are actually this vibrant this close up.
No wonder these feathers have been the inspiration of so many artists and fashion designers.
You can tell this bird knows I’m a fan. He let me, so patiently, take photos. He’s definitely used to it!
